How To Choose The Best Paint Finishes for Your Home

When choosing the best paint for your home, we follow a basic rule of thumb when choosing paint sheens. The higher the sheen the higher the shine.

A higher sheen is good for durability and washability, while a lower sheen is great for hiding imperfections.

Paint sheen ranges from Flat/Matt, Low Sheen Eggshell, Eggshell/Satin, Pearl, and Semi-Gloss.

Best Paint For Ceilings:

  • Mainly Flat, but also Eggshell or Semi-Gloss for Kitchens and Bathrooms

Best Paint For Walls:

  • Flat/Matt (hides imperfections best, but low washability)

  • Eggshell (most popular for both washability factor and mid-range sheen)

  • Semi-Gloss (mainly bathrooms)

Best Paint for Trim/Doors:

  • Satin

  • Pearl

  • Semi-Gloss (most popular)

Low/Zero VOC Paints

Low VOC paints have reduced amounts of Volatile Organic Compounds. They don't off-gas as much as traditional paints. So there is less paint fume smell during and after the painting project is finished. Low/Zero Fume paint may be helpful for people that are very sensitive to paint smells or for homes with small children.
